As an organization, the AMC-DC Chapter does not create its own
conservation/environmental projects. As a strictly volunteer action group,
we do not have the resources to do so. Instead, it is our practice to lend
volunteers to other organizations involved in conservation or environmental
work which we feel is aligned with the goals and mission of the AMC-DC Chapter.
Our objective is to offer our volunteer activists approximately 12 opportunities
per year to join other chapter members in lending helping hands to these organizations.
We have chosen 7 such environmental groups. The two major partners are the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and The Nature Conservancy. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation
is engaged in monitoring the health of our beloved bay and conducting educational
programs and hands on action projects to preserve it, including a cooperative
Oyster Recovery Project with the University of Maryland's Horn Point Laboratory
in Cambridge. The Nature Conservancy acquires land with special characteristics,
trees, plant life or wildlife habitat and sets that land aside for the recreational
use and enjoyment of our own and future generations, attempting to preserve
the special nature of that land. The activities of The Nature Conservancy
are also educational. On this page, you will find links to the websites and
volunteer activity calendars of both organizations. You will also find the
AMC-DC Chapter joint activity schedules. Regardless of the activity, we try
to have AMC-DC type fun as a part of the day, adding in a hike or paddle of
some kind, and, of course, ending the day with a meal for social interaction.
We are also on the conservation action networks of the above organizations
and the AMC. We frequently ask members help in e-mail or fax campaigns to
legislators and other government officials to make our views and desires regarding
conservation and environmental issues and legislation known. As they say in
the legislatures, the people that are there in some way are heard! Our other five partners are: The Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Patuxent River Park, The National Aquarium in Baltimore, The National Wildlife Federation, and the Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area.
