About the Washington, D.C. Chapter: |
||
| The Appalachian Mountain Club has twelve volunteer-led Chapters from Maine through
Washington, DC. The Washington, DC Chapter, which was started 13 years ago, is the
next-to-youngest chapter. With approximately 1700 members, it is also one of the smallest.
The Chapter was started by a group of enthusiastic AMC members who lived in this area and
wanted local activities.
Volunteers lead hikes, bike rides, trail cleanups, and pot lucks. We sometimes have weekend backpacking trips. The mix of activities provided are determined by the interests of our leaders. Activities are published in a trip listing which is distributed to chapter members three times a year with our newsletter.When publishing schedules permit, our activities are also published in the AMC Outdoors which is sent to all AMC members. Our activities are open to both members and non-members. We encourage membership, because dues pay our organizational costs and also support the conservation and research efforts of the central organization. Most activities are free. When carpooling is part of an activity, riders pay drivers four cents per mile. We are bound together by our enjoyment of the outdoors and our desire to protect the resources we use. We welcome all who would join with us. |
